Y2K Movies

A Short Review and Summary of Different Y2k Movies

I will be going over a few of the various movies available about the millennium bug. I will be careful not to do any spoiling and stick to overall movie quality.

Some of the reviews you can look forward to include:

  • The quality of acting in the movies
  • The special effects quality level
  • Is the plot good enough to keep you entertained
  • My opinion on whether or not you should spend time watching these y2k movies.

Y2k movie poster - 1999 movie terminal countdown.Y2K Movie (1999)

As the new millennium approaches an unforeseen problem has risen. A long lost nuclear missile is hidden deep in the jungle and it is set to go off on years years of 2000. A military team is assembled to track down this missile and avert imminent disaster caused by the y2k bug.

This show lacks great acting and I personally give it about 2 out of 5 stars. If you are interested in fairly action packed jungle movie it might be worth taking a look at it. This y2k movie is low budget and it shows, but it could probably entertain the right type of viewer. Would I watch it again? No I wouldn’t, but it wasn’t a total wast of time. On those nights where you cant sleep and just about any movie or tv show will do, this would suffice.

 The Y2K File (2013)

This movie is not too bad. It is one of the most recent y2k movies being from 2013. Of all of the y2k movies listed on this page, this one is probably my favorite. It’s not crazy intense and you won’t be on the edge of your seat, but it is worth watching.

Plot Summary without Spoilers:

The story starts at the dawn of the new millennium. A man called Knock-Knock has lost his parents in a fire that burned down their family home. Knock-Knock is ready to move away from his horrible past and found a large house in North London. The home was once inhabited by a family of thirteen who mysteriously vanished without a trace. As he was living in the house, a few horrifying occurrences took place; each day he will report the crazy and terrifying events to a website known as the y2k diary.

Y2K: Year to Kill (Aug 1999)

Y2k - Year to kill movie poster from 1999This movie is lacking in a lot of ways. Personally I would give it 1 out of 5 stars and consider myself being generous with that rating. I found this review snippet on IMBD and it seems to about sum it up:

” Apart from the gimmick of Y2k, the film itself is horrible; perhaps the worst I’ve ever seen–and I’m a dedicated MST3k fan. The plot is nonsensical. It tried to capture some of Tarantino’s knack for nonlinearity, but it ultimately collapsed into incoherence. The cast was atrocious; the acting was uniformly poor, but the leads were particularly ugly and uninspired. It may poor taste to focus on the looks of the cast, but I feel it is warranted in this case. Take the female lead, for instance: I wasn’t expecting a Perfect Ten pinup, but she was so homely she made Chloe Sevigny look like Grace Kelly. Perhaps the worst part was the editing; running little over ninety minutes, it felt like three hours.” http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0776740/

 2000 A.D. (2000)(Gong Yuan 2000 AD)

Y2k movie 2000 ADThis movie has a lot of Chinese subtitles. It has a fairly decent storyline and is available on netflix at the moment. The acting is not too bad, but don’t expect to be wowed by this movie at all. The special effects are old school and the action level is pretty low. I rated it 2 stars, because I have seen worse movies. I would not pay any money to watch this y2k movie, but if you are a member of netflix and have watched everything else on that website, this could be worth watching.
